I’m Grand Dad!
Welcome to GrandDad Helper. I’m Grand Dad. I’m a Baby Boomer in my mid-fifties. I’m a baby of the 60’s and came of age in the late 70’s and early 80’s. When I was born both of my grandfathers had already passed from life. When I was in college my Dad passed without any grandchildren. I had to break this no Grand Dad cycle!
So a wonderful woman found me in college and we were married after graduation. We had children in our late twenties. Then it was a matter of raising these kids and waiting for grandchildren.
First it was putting my daughter through college. She found a wonderful man and married him before she graduated! I was thinking I would have grandchildren in no time. But then with encouragement from me and my wife she went to Grad School. And with her masters she went right into her profession. So I was waiting and not bugging her about it.
Then the phone rang one day and my daughter said, “Hey Dad” you are going to be a grandparent. “Hey Dad” was my name for 20 something years while my kids were growing up and I loved that name. When I heard “Hey Dad” I knew one of my kids was actually paying attention to me and wanted to talk to me (or wanted something).
But now I got to pick another name for myself. Could be Grandpa, Grandfather, Papa, etc.
Grandpa – sounded too regular
Papa – fine when the grandchildren are real young but not when they are old
Peepaw – sounds too much like what I might be doing when I’m real old!
Pops – my second choice because I drink about a dozen diet sodas per day
Grand Dad – that’s the ticket! It sounds so Grand when it comes out of the mouth of a little boy or girl with a slight southern accent.
So as Grand Dad I have noticed that many people in my age bracket have children who need help and we have Aging Parents. We are kind of in the middle with lots of people to help. This blog will be primarily a place to talk about how to help Grand Dads and Moms.
Next time I will get into it more. For now may God Bless us one and all.
